Towns underwent much ‘improvement’ in the nineteenth century. Newport is an example of the many forms of improvement from street paving, water and sewage to new town halls. We look at the institutions and mechanisms used to bring about change and the benefits that resulted.

Richard Hoyle is Chair and General Editor of the Victoria County History Shropshire. He was formerly Professor of Rural History at the University of Reading and Professor of Local and Regional History at the Institute of Historical Research.
